Patterns

Romans 12:2  Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

What is a pattern? Thinking on this I am reminded of an old habit of buying patterns with all the good intentions of making something really great. I would be in JoAnn’s and see the cute patterns and fabric and thought look what I can make and even save some money. Unfortunately the only pattern I ended up cutting out was the one where all my good intentions got buried underneath other good intentions and new commitments, buried under life. All those unmade clothes just sat in my closet collecting dust sitting without shape or purpose. Just patterns and fabric, nothing good coming from them and on top of that all the money I did not save.

My real pattern was not a dress pattern but a life pattern of putting off what I wanted to do in my heart, all those good intentions, but never made time for in my life. The patterns we fall into in this world tend to betray us and keep us from doing what we really want and need to do. We get stuck, complacent, satisfied with mediocrity. We become depressed and unsatisfied with life, conforming to the pattern of the world and not God’s.

Romans 12:2  Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world but be transformed  by the renewing of your mind so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. And in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and  Hebrews 4:12 we are told that scripture is  God breathed and gives life, a pattern for living and that it is a powerful sword that cuts, judging the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The Bible cuts us into the shape of the pattern God has for our lives. Like a pattern laid over the material for the purpose of becoming something useful, God’s word when laid over our lives transforms us into the shape God desires for us. So if we want to know God’s will (pattern) for our lives we must follow the pattern He has set.

If you want to change the pattern of your life a new one has to begin.  For next 21 days to read a chapter a day in John. As you read you will get to know Jesus, how he lived and what he taught.  Read with a purpose, write what you learn and how you can apply this to your daily life establishing new patterns.

I understand what it is like to have the many burdens placed on you and how easy it is to fall into old patterns but as we read scripture and lay it over our lives (apply it)  we no longer follow the tired old pattern of this world but the pattern to transformation.

  1. What a great reminder to “put off” that which hinders us and “put on” the pattern of Christ!

  2. Oh love this, “The patterns we fall into in this world tend to betray us and keep us from doing what we really want and need to do.” I tweeted it and hopefully others will come to read.
