Why Study the Names of God

Magnify the Lord with me, And let us exalt His name together! (Psalm 34:3)

This is the first lesson in The Names Of God Bible study. For more information on why study His names click on the following link:

I would love to have you join me in a study on the names of God. I will list a name with the scripture reference and we can begin this study together. As you study through the Scripture answer the questions and share your insight in the comments. I am looking forward to learning and discussing together!

To study the names of God and to get to know Him will make a difference in your life. His names describe His attributes who He is and what He does. To know God’s names is to know Him!

What attributes of God come to mind when you think of Him?

“Yahweh is God’s proper name in Hebrew. The most common and the most important name for God in the Old Testament is a name that in our English versions never even gets translated. Whenever you see the word LORD in all capital letters, you know that this name is behind it. In Hebrew the name had four letters—YHWH—and may have been pronounced something like Yahweh The importance of it can be seen in the sheer frequency of its use. It occurs 6,828 times in the Old Testament. What this shows is that God aims to be known not as a generic deity, but as a specific Person with a name that carries his unique character and mission”. John Piper

Why should we learn the names of God?

As you read and think on these verses look for the following:

What do you learn about God, His attributes and His name?

What should your response be in light of what you learned?

How does knowing God by His names impact your life?

What other insights did you see?
Psalm 8

Psalm 9:10

Psalm 20

Psalm 113:1-4

Proverbs 18:10

Exodus 3:13-15

Matthew 1:23

John 8:56-58
I look forward to hearing from you!

After reading all the scriptures, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. Maybe this is overly simple but I felt this smirky sense of, “and this, Dena, is the God you put off to the side in favor of your own way…. really? REALLY?” I guess that’s me being snarky – not God – but I do like to think He and I get to chuckle over Him reminding me of His majesty and me forgetting how big he really is…… Looking forward to tomorrow’s new assignments!

Dena, Thank you for your comments! Isn’t God’s word great to speak peace to us and so thankful that He knows we are human and is lovingly patient with us.
      Blessing to you!
