The Names Of God Study-El Elyon-God Most High

The-Names-of-God-560x374 title page 2

I would love to have you join me each week and study the names of God. The names of God reveal the character of God, His attributes and His nature. To know His names is to know Him, to take rest and comfort in Him. Each Wednesday, I will list a name with the scripture reference and we can begin this study together. Each week as you study through the Scripture answer the questions and share your insight here on the blog in the comments.
(These studies are just a taste on the names of God. Hopefully it will give you some help and a start to transformation with a desire to dig deeper into His attributes you want to learn more about.)

The name we looked at last week that is in the archives is Elohim -He is the Creator and we have been created to have purpose and meaning in our lives to give Him glory.

The name of God we will look at this week is El Elyon- highest, exalted one, the sovereign ruler over all.

The meaning of sovereignty could be summed up in this way: To be sovereign is to possess supreme power and authority so that one is in complete control and can accomplish whatever he pleases. (bible.org)
When we can grasp and cling to the fact that He is in control and nothing takes Him by surprise. It will transform the way we think and live our lives.

Look up the following verses and list what you learn about God Most High and His sovereignty.

In Genesis 14:17-24 what does God Most High possess and what did He do?

In Daniel 2:20-23 how does he describe God?

Read Daniel 4:24 & 25, 34-37 (It would be good to read the whole chapter to see in context what Nebuchadnezzar is saying and why)

What happened to King Nebuchadnezzar and why?

What did he come to realize about God?

Isaiah 46:9-10 what does God say about Himself?

Psalm 97 shows us how great and awesome God is that even the mountains melt and the earth trembles in His presence. He is God above everything and everyone.

Psalm 115:1-3 tells us that our God is in heaven and He does whatever He pleases!

1 Chronicles 29: 10-11 what did David know and say about the Lord to bless Him?

Following are other places we see Most High God.
He is sovereign over Satan in Job.

Joseph trusted and knew Most High God in all he went through. Because of this he could say to his brothers “you meant it for evil but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result to preserve many people alive” (Genesis 50:20)

This reminds me of a quote from John Piper “In every situation and circumstance of your life, God is always doing a thousand different things you cannot see and you do not know”

What is he saying in this quote?

In Luke 1:31-37 Mary is told she will have a son and he will be called the Son of the Most High. He will be conceived when the Holy Spirit will come upon her and the power of the Most High will overshadow her.

In Hebrews 1:1-3 Jesus is the exact image of God and He upholds all things by His power.

What does Colossians 1:15-18 say about Jesus?

In Ephesians 1:5 Paul tells us that we were predestined to adoption through Jesus because of the kind intentions of His will.

How are believers shown to be sons of the Most High in Luke 6:27-36?

How does Romans 8:28-30 encourage you that God is Sovereign?

Go back and review your list of what you saw in the verses. In light of what you have seen that El Elyon is in charge how can it change your thinking and outlook on:
Life

Marriage

Family

Finances

The Government

Do you see there is no need to try to control things, to fear or stress?

We can be thankful that He is Sovereign and in absolute, total control and nothing can happen in our lives without His permission. We can accept our circumstances that He has allowed to bring about our highest good and His greatest glory. God has it all under control and will work it out according to how He has planned.

What one thing can you apply from this lesson to help you to live Inside Out?

Write out your prayer to El Elyon, giving Him all your concerns and fears and thanking Him that He has it all worked out for our good!
