The Names of God Study- El Roi- The God Who Sees

The-Names-of-God-560x374 title page 2

I would love to have you join me each week and study the names of God. The names of God reveal the character of God, His attributes and His nature. To know His names is to know Him, to take rest and comfort in Him. Each Wednesday, I will list a name with the scripture reference and we can begin this study together. Each week as you study through the Scripture answer the questions and share your insight here on the blog in the comments.

These studies are just a taste on the names of God. Hopefully it will give you some help and a start to transformation with a desire to dig deeper into His attributes you want to learn more about. I am looking forward to learning and discussing together!

We have looked at two names so far, Elohim and El Elyon which are in the archives.
Elohim -He is the Creator and we have been created to have purpose and meaning in our lives to give Him glory.

El Elyon- God Most High who is sovereign and in total control and we can place our confidence and trust in Him. We can accept our circumstances that He has allowed to bring about our highest good and His greatest glory.

This week we will look at El Roi- The God who sees.
El Roi is the name of God to remember when you are going through trials – El Roi sees and He knows what you are going through.

Read Genesis 16 and answer the following questions.

What was the situation with Abraham and Sarah?

What do you learn about Hagar?

How was Hagar and Sarah’s relationship?

What did Hagar learn about God?

What do you think she was feeling and experiencing when God revealed Himself to her?

Read Genesis 21:8-21
What do you learn about Hagar and her son from this passage?

In Genesis 16 she said God sees- what did God do for her in 21:19?

What do you learn about God and His promises?

Are you or have you been in a similar situation?

During her darkest time Hagar learned that God was watching over her and the new life within her. God told her His plan to bless her and her son. In Abraham’s distress God also gave him a promise concerning Ishmael. Abraham’s grandson Esau married Ishmael’s daughter and it was the Ishmaelite traders who took his great grandson Joseph into slavery in Egypt and the story of redemption continues. Joseph is the first of many deliverers God sent who would point to the greater deliver of God-Jesus.

Reflect on what you see in the following verses about God who sees:
Psalm 33:13-22
Psalm 121
Proverbs 15:3

Maybe like Hagar you’re also running from a difficult situation in which you were unjustly treated or part of the problem You can take comfort in the truth that El Roi sees your distress, your pain, misery, past and loves you. He is so watchful that He knows when a sparrow falls (Matthew 10:29-31), how much more does he watch and care for you.

Let’s put it all together: He is Elohim, the Creator – He created us for His glory. He is El Elyon, the Sovereign God who is in control and whatever things that have been in our lives have been allowed by a God who filters all things through His hands of love. When we realize that he is El Roi, the God who sees, we can run to Him and take comfort in Him.

In living Inside Out- let’s pray what David prayed in Psalm 139:23-24 Search me O God and know my heart, try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there by any hurtful way in me and lead me in the everlasting way.

I think I often think of this concept of “God sees” in such an abstract way that I forget that He sees me. It was such a great reminder that Hagar was in a rough patch that someone else had created and God still saw, comforted and stood by His promises. What a comfort. Enjoying this study!

El Roi is a favorite one of mine. It’s very comforting to know that even in the deepest darkness, God sees me. I can trust that He is with me and that the light will shine once again.
