The-Names-of-God-560x374 title page 2

Welcome to the Names of God Bible study.

The names of God reveal the character of God, His attributes and His nature. To know His names is to know Him, to take rest and comfort in Him. I will list a name with the scripture reference and we can begin this study together.

These studies are just a taste on the names of God. Hopefully it will give you some help and a desire to dig deeper into His attributes you want to learn more about. I am looking forward to learning and discussing together! Please share your insights on the blog.

We have looked at three names so far which are in the archives.
Elohim -He is the Creator and we have been created to have purpose and meaning in our lives to give Him glory.

El Elyon- God Most High who is sovereign and in total control and we can place our confidence and trust in Him. We can accept our circumstances that He has allowed to bring about our highest good and His greatest glory.

El Roi- God who sees-El Roi is the name of God to remember when you are going through trials – El Roi sees and He knows what you are going through.

This week we will look at El Shaddai- God Almighty-All Powerful-All Sufficient.

We first see this name when God reveals it to Abraham. In Genesis 12 when he was 75 years old God called him to leave his country for the one God would show him. He also told him all families of the earth will be blessed in him. Abraham believed God and left Haran. In Genesis 15 God promised him an heir and verse 6 says he believed God and He counted it to him as righteousness. In Genesis 16 he tried to take matters in his own hands with Hagar, a moment of unbelief and self-sufficiency.
Then we come to Genesis 17 when he is 99 years old and God reaffirms His promise.

Genesis 17:1-14
Who does God tell Abram He is?

What does God establish with him?

Why does God change Abram’s name to Abraham?

Genesis 17:15
Why does God change Sarai’s name?

What was their reaction to what God had told them?

What was God going to establish with Isaac their son?

Abraham and Sara no longer had the capacity, ability or self- sufficiency to do things in their own strength. They were essentially “dead” and God revealed to them He is All Mighty, All Powerful, and All Sufficient!

God is the one who called Abraham and established His covenant with him. Those who believe are the recipients of the promise when He calls us into relationship with Him!

In Genesis 17:5-6,15-16 God gave them new names that revealed His promise of what He will do as God Almighty.
Names reveal the character of a person and when we are in Christ we have a “new name” because we are a new creation-2 Corinthians 5:17.

God told Abraham in Genesis 17 to walk before “Me and be blameless”, I am Almighty God who will bring life out of “dead” by making you exceedingly fruitful and the father of many nations.
We too who were “dead” can walk before Him blameless because of Jesus-the promised seed of Abraham:
Romans 4:16-25

Galatians 3:6-9, 13-16, 26-29

Ephesians 2:4-5, 8-10 and 4:1

There is so much more on El Shaddai and we only looked at in the life of Abraham. The main thing I want us to see is that He is mighty to save! He kept His promise of a Redeemer to bring death to life. He rids us of our self-sufficiency through The promised one Jesus who gave himself for us who were dead and brought us to life!

If you have any doubts that God can’t help you get rid of them! He has a plan for you and He will accomplish it.

God is All Mighty, All Powerful, and All Sufficient!
