Influenced By Mom and Grandma

Paul said Timothy’s faith was sincere which means it was genuine, real, true and without hypocrisy. Timothy’s mom was a Jewish believer who followed Jesus and his dad was Greek and probably not a believer. He learned scripture during childhood from his mom and grandma. (2 Timothy 1:5; 3:14-15 and Acts 16:1-3)

Timothy already had a good foundation from his mom and grandma who knew the Word of God when he met Paul. We play a very important role in the spiritual life of our children. No one has more potential for a godly influence on a child than a mom and grandma who love the Lord and His Word above all else.

Like Eunice and Lois we need to teach our children and grandchildren the Scriptures and introduce them to the saving knowledge of Jesus. We can be encouraged to follow their example to guide our children and grandchildren in the Word. We do this exposing them to and reading the Bible to them and most important, living it in front of them. When they see our desire to follow God and His Word in a real way we are teaching and training them.

Don’t be discouraged or worry if the dad is not a believer or not interested in things of God. God’s purpose in your child’s life will be accomplished. God provided Timothy with a grandma and mom to teach him and He brought Paul into his life as his “spiritual father”.

There are no guarantees that if we follow certain steps or formulas our children will come to a sincere faith. We are responsible to follow God, to teach and train our children in His ways.

In His Word we can learn and act upon what He says about being a woman of God. We are reminded in
2 Timothy 3:16-17 that “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”

We are to pray daily for God to empower us by the Holy Spirit to walk faithfully before Him. He tells us in 2 Peter 1:3 that “God’s divine power has given us everything pertaining to life and godliness by the knowledge of Him who called us by His glory and excellence”.

As you go throughout your day interacting with your children talk to them about Jesus, His life and what He has done. Share and live out Scripture with them. Let them know how the Lord has and is currently working in your life. Pray that the Holy Spirit will give you the words to say as you teach and train your children.
